Showdown in No-Limit Texas Hold’em
When the showdown happens
The showdown is the final phase of a hand, occurring after all betting rounds finish. In Hold’em the last betting round is the river, the fifth community card. If two or more players remain after river betting, the showdown determines who wins the pot. Think of the showdown as when players’ final decisions end and the cards decide.
Who must show cards first
The order of revealing matters because the player contesting the pot must follow the correct sequence.
- The player who made the last aggressive action (a bet or a raise) on the final betting round shows first. Example: on the river Player A bets $100 and Player B calls. Player A made the last bet, so A must show first.
- If there was no bet on the river, the active player nearest to the left of the dealer button shows first (the dealer button marks the nominal dealer position). Example: no river betting and the button sits on Player C; the active player immediately left of the button opens their hand.
- Subsequent players reveal as needed to claim the pot. Players who don’t need to show-for example, if an earlier exposed hand already wins-may muck.
Showing vs mucking: claiming the pot
To claim any portion of the pot you must reveal enough cards so others can see the winning five-card combination. Mucking means folding your cards face-down without showing them.
- If you want to win or split the pot, show your cards.
- If your hand is beaten or you choose not to contest, you may muck without revealing.
- Example: you hold 7♠2♣ and an opponent shows A♠K♠ making a straight; you may fold face-down and not reveal your cards.
- Mucked hands cannot win the pot and cannot later overturn a ruling.
How the winner is determined
At showdown each player’s best possible five-card hand uses any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards. Compare those best five-card hands to decide the winner.
Example: the board is A♦ K♣ 7♠ 3♥ 2♣. Player A has A♠2♠ (two pair: Aces and Twos). Player B has K♦K♠ (three of a kind: Kings). Player B’s three of a kind outranks Player A’s two pair, so Player B wins the pot.
Ties, splitting the pot, and post-showdown procedure
If two or more players hold identical best five-card hands, split the pot evenly among them. A common tied situation occurs when the five community cards make the best hand by themselves, for example K♠ K♥ K♦ 2♣ 2♦; all remaining players still in the hand split the pot.
After awarding the pot, the dealer button moves one seat clockwise and a new hand is dealt under the same betting and showdown rules.
No-limit betting and its effect on showdown
Under No-Limit rules there is no fixed cap on the number or size of raises in a betting round, subject to stack sizes. That freedom can change who made the last aggressive action on the river, and therefore who must show first. Aside from who shows first, showdown procedures remain the same regardless of bet sizes.
Short checklist
- Showdown only when two or more players remain after the river.
- Last bettor/raiser on the final round shows first; otherwise player left of dealer shows first.
- Reveal cards to claim the pot; otherwise you may muck.
- Best five-card hand wins; identical hands split the pot.
- Dealer button moves clockwise and a new hand is dealt.
- No-limit allows unlimited raises before showdown.
