The four programs in detail

Poker Skill
A learning app for beginners
Free forever.
Best for Beginners who want to learn the game and practice real decisions before paying for analysis tools.
Skip if You already play online and want a tracker for your hands or a solver for your spots.
Free version Every lesson, the Daily Puzzle and one Practice vs AI game a day. Poker Skill Plus is an optional subscription.
Where it runs iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later) and Android
We built Poker Skill for Texas Hold'em. A lesson takes a few minutes and teaches one concept with hands that test it, and every answer gets coaching, so you see why a play works as well as whether you got it right. Practice vs AI deals full hands against AI opponents that run on Showdown AI, heads-up or three-player, with Coach Max grading each decision. Nothing in it involves wagering or real-money play.

PokerSnowie
An AI opponent that flags your mistakes
$29.90 a month
Best for Players who know the rules and want Live Advice on their mistakes as they play, on a computer.
Skip if You want to practice on an iPhone, because PokerSnowie's iPhone app was last updated in 2018.
Free version A 10-day free trial, then a subscription.
Where it runs Windows and Mac; an iPhone app for subscribers
PokerSnowie is an AI coach for No-Limit Hold'em that you play against. With Live Advice on, it gives feedback during play each time it thinks you made an error, showing the play it prefers and how often it would take each option. On Windows, the subscription also imports your own hands for analysis and adds preflop and range advice. It costs $29.90 a month, or $199.90 for the first year paid annually, with renewals at the standard rate.

Compared with Poker Skill: PokerSnowie is the better pick at a Windows or Mac desk, where its Live Advice flags mistakes as you play, while Poker Skill's Practice vs AI games run on iPhone, iPad and Android.

GTO Wizard
Solved spots and a graded trainer in the browser
Free plan
Best for Players who know the basics and want to check their decisions against a solver, starting on a free plan.
Skip if You are still learning hand rankings and position, because its answers come as frequencies across a whole range.
Free version 100 preflop solutions, 1 postflop solution and 10 Trainer hands a day, with no end date.
Where it runs A web browser, on a computer or a phone; no study app in the App Store or Google Play
GTO Wizard is a study platform built on a solver. Pick a spot from its library and it shows how often each hand in a range takes each action. Its trainer grades your own decisions against the solver, and you can upload your hand histories for review. For cash games, Starter costs $39 a month billed yearly ($468) or $49 month to month, with a 7-day refund guarantee on paid plans. Solving a spot you set up yourself takes its AI solver, which starts on the Elite plan at $139 a month billed yearly.

Compared with Poker Skill: GTO Wizard checks your decisions against a solver, which pays off once ranges make sense to you, while Poker Skill's lessons build up to ranges from hand rankings and position.
PokerTracker 4
A database and HUD for your own online hands
$64.99 once
Best for Online players who want to review their own hands and read opponents' stats, at sites that allow tracking.
Skip if You don't play online yet, because it works from the hand histories that online poker sites save.
Free version A 14-day free trial, with the HUD marked as a trial and custom stats locked.
Where it runs Windows and Mac
PokerTracker 4 imports hand histories from supported online poker sites whose rules permit tracking, then builds reports, graphs and a HUD that shows each opponent's stats at the table. Its LeakTracker is built to find and plug leaks in your own stats. The Hold'em license is a one-time purchase of $64.99 for small stakes or $99.99 for all stakes, with a year of updates included, after which a yearly fee of $44.99 or $69.99 keeps them coming.

Compared with Poker Skill: Once you play online, PokerTracker 4 measures how you and your opponents play there, while Poker Skill teaches what to do in a hand and why, one short lesson at a time.
What a beginner needs first, and what can wait
A beginner’s first job is the game itself: the hand rankings, what each position at the table changes and which hands to play from each seat before the flop. Preflop choices belong in that first job because the hands you choose help decide the spots you face after the flop. Poker Skill begins where that list begins, with hand rankings and reading the board, then positions and blinds. It teaches outs and the rule of 2 and 4, which turns an out count into a rough chance of hitting, before it reaches raise-or-fold decisions by position.
A solver helps when ranges already make sense to you. It works out a GTO strategy for one spot from the pot, the stacks, the bet sizes and each player’s range, and it answers in frequencies: how often each hand takes each action. Read too early, those answers look contradictory, because two similar hands can take different actions in the same spot.
A tracker has nothing to read until you play online. It works from the hand histories an online poker site saves for every hand you play, and its HUD shows each opponent’s stats, such as VPIP, beside their seat. Those stats grow more reliable as the hands add up, though a player far from the usual numbers shows it sooner, so a tracker pays off for a regular online player more than for a newcomer. How to get better at poker matches each kind of study to the leak it fixes.
Signs a solver or a tracker will pay off
Who should skip Poker Skill
Skip Poker Skill if you already play online and want your own hands tracked or your spots solved. PokerTracker 4 reads the files that online poker sites save, so it suits online play, while GTO Wizard’s library of solved spots covers cash games and tournaments whether you play online or live.
How we compared
- What it does
- What it assumes you know
- What it costs
We judged each program on what it does, what a beginner needs to know before it helps, what it costs and where it runs. Facts about Poker Skill come from its store listings, the app itself and the Poker Skill training app page; facts about the other three come from their own websites and store listings, all read in September 2026. Who each program fits is our judgment. PokerStars Learn is left out because its pages open FanDuel’s homepage for visitors in the United States.
Frequently asked questions
Is GTO Wizard good for beginners?
Yes, once positions and preflop ranges make sense to you, because reading solver output takes poker knowledge and practice. Its library shows how often each hand in a range takes each action, and its trainer grades each of your decisions against the solver. The 10 Trainer hands a day on GTO Wizard's free plan show whether you're ready before you pay.
Is PokerSnowie worth it for a beginner?
It can be, if you know the rules and want to learn by playing full hands against an AI on a computer. Its Live Advice gives feedback during play each time it thinks you made an error and shows how often it would take each option. PokerSnowie's 10-day free trial shows whether its feedback suits you before the $29.90 monthly price starts.
Do beginners need a poker tracker or HUD?
No, not until you play online at a site that allows one. A tracker such as PokerTracker 4 builds its stats from the hand histories that online poker sites save, and a HUD's read on an opponent firms up as the hands add up. When you start playing online, you can try PokerTracker 4 free for 14 days.
